I was a child who went about in a world of colors. ~Frida Kahlo
Exposure is the lifeblood of this planet. Some may say it’s babies, since without procreation, where would us Earthen dwellers be? While I think both are the ultimate concerto. For what is the point in having existence if not to merge one to another? It’s simply never made any sense to me to foregoexploring. Why else would there be such a vast array of beings? I believe in the ancient oracles of time that we all descended from the same pedigree of creatures who breathe air and begancrawling and later walked upright. Some of us better at adventuring versus staying put, mountains compared to beaches or sands, cooking as opposed to dining, or roots over ego. Yet, near anyone is fractionally to fully mutt or closely adjacent. A brew of generational mashups between backgrounds that braid civilizations around our entire globe.
I lucked out on growing up in a home that didn’t shy from other cultures. In fact, a deep consciousness of discovery runs through each of my parents’ veins. Within our small rural Southern town, their philosophy polished my sis and me about what lay beyond our local latitude. They brought students, professors, PhDs, ambassadors, dignitaries, and friends from faraway lands to our house. We mingled with Chicanos, Chinese, various Eastern/Europeans, and Egyptians in the least. There were dinner parties, grill hangs with lake swimming, and the beautiful young Spanish teaching assistant to tutor us girls in her language. No one was shunned. It gave me the radar for considering that my oyster meant I could travel anywhere and be welcomed. A unique gift I’d realize in my older years. They took our U.S. traditions and upped the ante to educate us more.
Yo no crucé la frontera, (I didn’t cross the border,)
la frontera me cruzó. (the border crossed me) ~Somos Más Americanos by Mána
People who live large and often aren’t afraid to make bold statements are my kind of idols. Those who’re willing to pull up and picnic anyplace exactly as they’ll buckle down to work until the job is well done. Folks who will risk it all for the best opportunity results for their relationships (boundary hopping and effortful toil, usually quite devoid of needed stopping). However, the cushion that countless individuals have keeps them from appreciating the remainder. We can easily get stuck on only those things shown to us. But in doing so, we miss so much by failing to allow total divulgence. To delve into any parts unknown. For me, carousing the capacity of conception isn’t just the undeniable multiplication of humans. Rather, it’s the insertion of reaching further than your affiliated framework to feast upon that which is foreign to you.
To learn to trade our customs for the tang of a new flavor. This is my purpose for clinking glasses today, crafting my widest smiles, giant hugs, and trying to spare my family any heartache. Because I’ve seen the synthesis that our sister country exudes. A pride that I ponder might be lost in the parade of politics that pushes forth first. Besides the Cinco de Mayo of guzzling too many margaritas, wearing sombreros, dancing and singing with the mariachi bands, or rivaling Movember with a thick mustache lie truths about El Día de la Batalla de Puebla. Still, we can celebrate and pay tribute to the rituals we like acquired from interesting and invaluable immigrants. You may frequent their yummy eateries, let them be the whisperers they are tending your gardens or children, and support any business they build. If you’re ever gonna truly own your humanity, it oughta be inclusively Latino influenced.
